Keel Mountain Nature Preserve

Intro:

The Keel Mountain Nature Preserve is located on the south-west slope of Keel Mountain in Gurley, Alabama. Keel Mountain Preserve sits on a 310 acre tract of land and is home to the Lost Sinks trail. The Lost Sinks trail is a 1.5 mile out and back trail that will take you to a scenic sink and waterfall. Keel Mountain Nature Preserve is maintained by the Nature Conservancy.

Trail Head:

The trail head is located just off of McMullen road

To access the trail head: The trail head is right there at the parking lot, you can't miss it.

Difficulty:

I rate this a medium since it does a get a little steep in some places.

Hiking the Trail:

This trail is pretty simple since it's one way and well marked. Just get started and enjoy the hike up to the lost sinks. When you get to the lost sinks you will get an awesome view of the sink and a waterfall. NOTE: You are not allowed to walk down to the bottom of the sink. However, you can walk the trail around the edge at the top. Once you've reached the sinks I would suggest not going any further since the trail becomes much less defined and grown up, plus I don't think it leads to anywhere worth seeing.

Scenery:

You will get great views of forest, rock formations, and the scenic sink and waterfall.

Trail Maintenance:

The trail is well maintained

Facilities:

There are no facilities at the trail head, however the trail is located near the town of Gurley so you can stop there if you need to.
