Intro:

The TVA Cave Trail will take you to a scenic cave located on the south side of Guntersville Dam.

Trail Head:

Located just before you reach the south side of Guntersville Dam.

To access the trail head: You can't miss it. It's at the parking lot.

Difficulty:

It's pretty easy for the most part.

Hiking the Trail:

From the trail head you can go left or right. For my hike I took the right and headed that direction. After a bit of a walk I ended up at a trail intersection. When you reach this point I suggest staying right. This will take you to the bottom of the large boulders. This part of the trail will head westward and take you by a scenic Tupelo gum swamp. After a bit of hike along the boulders and swamp you will end up at the cave. The cave has a bit of civil war history related to it. Soldiers would mine it for ingredients to make gun powder (ingredients came from bat droppings in the cave, The Cathedral Caverns Cave, located at Cathedral Caverns State Park in Gurley, AL, was mined by civil war soldiers for the same reason). After enjoying the cave (Note: As of now I believe TVA has requested that no one enter the cave other than the entrance ) continue west and you will reach a metal stair case that TVA built to get you to the top of the mountain. It's a short walk up the stair case and it will give you a great view of the Tupelo gum swamp below. Just follow the white blaze trail and it will loop you back around to the parking area. The loop will take about 30 - 45 minutes to complete.

Scenery:

You will see rock formations, large boulders, a Tupelo gum swamp, and the cave.

Trail Maintenance:

The trail is well maintained

Facilities:

The trail is located near Guntersville Dam where the visitors area has restrooms.
