Devils Backbone Nature Trail

Intro:

The Devils Backbone is a 3.0 mile nature trail located just off the Natchez Trace Parkway near Hohenwald, Tn. The hike will take you down into a hollow, along side a creek, and back up again giving you a great experience in the Tennessee woodlands.

Trail Head:

The trail head is located just off the Natchez Trace Parkway, a few miles north of the Meriwhether Lewis Monument Park

To access the trail head: You can't miss it. It's near the parking area.

Difficulty:

Medium. There are a few strenuous hills depending on which way you go.

Hiking the Trail:

Starting from the trail head you will hike straight for about a 1/2 mile until you reach the place where the trail splits. From here you can go either way because it loops back around to this area. I would stay right since this will have you going downhill at the steepest point of the trail instead of having to battle it uphill. The trail will take you to the bottom of a hollow and along side a small creek before making its way back up. The loop part is about 2 miles. I suggest hiking the Fall Hollow Falls Trail before this. It is short and will give you an awesome view of some waterfalls. Combining the two hikes will get you in around 4.5 miles of hiking overall.

Scenery:

You will see a small creek, and a view of the Tennessee woodlands. During winter months you can probably get a good view when you are on the highland rim. It was to grown up for me to see real well since I went in the summer.

Trail Maintenance:

The trail is well maintained

Facilities:

There are no facilities here, however it is close to the Meriwhether Lewis Monument Park which has bathrooms and camping. It is also close to the Fall Hollow Falls trail and the 3.5 mile trail at the Meriwhether Lewis Park.
